Cliché

One of my many favorite things about living in the city is finding boutiques with gorgeous goodies! Can’t wait for warmer temps to embark on evening walks and bike rides to discover more treasures in Minneapolis.  Speaking of Treasures, I’ve found one of my favorite boutiques to shop at in the city. Introduced to me by a friend and merely a two block walk from my apartment; I find myself frequenting Cliche quite often.  A few of my favorite pieces from cliche HEREHERE and HERE

I love that you and your husband own Cliche together. He’s always been helpful and inviting every time I’m in there. How did you guys start decide to open cliche.?
Birth of Cliche:  We started off as vintage.  Then discovered we were really good at new clothing so changed direction quickly after we opened.  We have evolved into what we are.

Speaking of Cliche, I absolutely adore the name. What’s the story behind the name?
Just liked the name – as the shop morphed into a new and local design boutique it is more fitting.  To be a slave to fashion is cliche, and personally I hate the term Fashionista – so cliche.  Just think – skinny jeans will be cliche shortly! I prefer a more personal approach: I like it when a gal comes in, gets something new – feel amazing,  then receives compliments and says “I got it at Cliche!”  She is not cliche….

what can people expect to find when shopping at Cliche?
I personally do not have a look.  I wear whatever I want. So I think subconsciously I don’t buy a particular look – we are edgy and hip in several different genre. Local designers, denim, and awesome accessories. Just think edgy but still Minnesotan…I only have a few Lady Gaga/Nicky Manaj cage dresses.

I love supporting small businesses and admire the drive of pursuing a dream, what advice would you give to small business owners or someone aspiring to open a boutique?
Buck up – it is a lot more work, time, and money than you ever dreamed.  It will define your true friends.  Do something really different and if you are going into a market that is limited (like boutique shoppers) be sure you are unique enough to share them with existing businesses.
And remember if you want people to support you – you must also support other local biz.
