My rules for shopping

They say when it comes to life, there are no rules. Well, when it comes to shopping there are definitely rules; my rules. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made an impulse buy, only to have said item stare at me in my closet for months.. I’m sure you can relate.  This New Year, I am making a conscious effort to be better with my finances.

1) Always save your receipts. You know, for those days where you are just not in the mood to try on tons of clothing.  Saving my receipts alleviates the hassle of a return or exchange later. (just be aware of the store’s return policy)

2) Always have a sit down when trying pants on. One of my least favorite things to try on when shopping is pants. If they’re too tight, I feel confined or feels like my bottom is squished.  I recently purchased a pair of pants that fit perfectly when standing, sitting in them they’re a bit tight. So I always make sure to sit in the dressing room after trying them on.

3) See something you like but not sure if you want it? I hold off on it and if I’m still feining over it, that’s my cue.

4) So you find a great buy but it doesn’t quite fit? Get it tailored. What good is a killer dress or pants if it’s ill fitting?

5) I hate buyer’s remorse. When I plan to go shopping, I scoop my closet for things I’m lacking and make it a point to search for pieces I need. That way, I can avoid buying a cute black dress, despite already having 4 little black dresses.

Setting rules and having boundaries when shopping has been helpful to me. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.
