10 ways to self care when life gets rough

Self Care! You probably hear this word a billion times a day on social media lately. I know how busy, and chaotic life can get at times, so today I wanted to share how I engage in self care in my personal life. I try to engage in one of the following ideas below on a daily if not weekly basis. Engaging in self care on an on-going basis really helps to reduce stress levels not just when stuff hits the fan. Let’s dive in.self-care-tips

  1. Unplug– In a world where we seem to be attached to our phones,  and social media platforms etc. Taking a break from your phone, and giving your mind a break can be refreshing.
  2. Say No– If you feel that saying yes to projects or commitments that you are not in the space to carry out would add more to your plate, simply say no. (I’m writing a post on how to say no and not feel bad about it. Stay tuned)
  3. Go for a drive– Nothing clears my head like going for a drive, just because.  I use this time to reflect, listen to music and more importantly listen to my heart.
  4. Go to a coffee shop and  order your favorite drink. There’s something about ordering a Salted Caramel Mocha from Starbucks that does something for me.
  5. See a therapist. There’s nothing like investing in your emotional and mental health. It may be pricey, but it’s beyond worth it. Don’t be embarrassed about going to therapy either. I’m a school therapist ,and I go to counseling myself. There’s power and strength in feeding yourself emotionally to live your best life.
  6. Pray– Before I am anything else, I’m a Christian. My faith is the most important thing to me. It’s a driving force in how I live my life, and how I treat people. Praying, cultivating a personal relationship with Christ is a perpetual thing for me and it honestly, just helps.  Whatever you believe it, feeling connected to higher power can bring a sense of renewing.
  7. Talk to a close  trusted friend or family member. Use discernment about who you share with and what you share. Again, why number 5 is so important.
  8. Make a dope playlist. I’m obsessed with worship music. Over the past 7 years or so, it’s increasingly become my favorite genre. I work out to Elevation Worship, to put that in context for you. Whatever music speaks to your soul, sign into your iTunes, Spotify or music gallery and curate a self-care play list.
  9. Paint– I love painting. I’m no good at it. But really,  you don’t need to be good to enjoy it. Also, your art doesn’t need to be perfect to be beautiful.
  10. Reframe your thoughts– Perspective is everything, I promise you. Ex: ” Joey is late for dinner and this makes me upset.” vs. “It bugs me when Joey is late, but I’m glad he called to let me know he is running late.”

These are just a few things I do when I need to refresh, reset, and take some time for me. Hope you found a thing or two on this list that you’d like to try. If you found this helpful, and think a friend would love it, please feel free to share!

I’d love to hear from you on how you Self Care.
